ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

Media Service Nepal is a communication organization that was formally established in 1998 and developed as a private limited from 2009. MSN's goal is to cater to the need of development communication in the country. Development projects can't be translated into practice without effective communication. MSN works to bridge this gap through its expertise that is skilled to work in all genres of communication. From producing award-winning documentaries, to conducting trainings to enhance communicators at different levels, we have established ourselves as a responsible organization in the sphere of development communication.

We have an ambitious target to fulfill the requirement of development communication as demanded by the country. MSN constantly works to enhance its expertise in all fields of mass communication. Our services have centralized in print, audio-visual and multimedia sectors. We are undergoing various efforts to learn further in the open market.

Development communication is at the heart of our activities. Information plays a significant role in social change and MSN considers working jointly in development issues. Though it is a consultancy, we have studied in depth Nepal's socio-political situation. We have been working for various sectors of development communication for the past many years, which has provided us with scores of opportunities to learn.

Our Approach

Imagination, creativity, and presentation

Development communication is our highest priority. We are demand oriented and maintain a genuine interest in development issues. Our experience and feedbacks show that the materials we develop are dynamic, innovative and creative. MSN treats every communication material and package with equal care. We keep in mind three important aspects while accomplishing a task: Imagination, creativity, and presentation.

Audio-visual documentation and production

MSN launched its mission with audio-visual production. It started A-V production in 1998. Ever since, MSN has been producing videos on various themes for different organizations. It has produced more than 160 documentaries so far. There are booklets available which give a synopsis of the movies we have made. These project films were based on social and developmental issues. MSN has also independently produced 8 movies that were based on various social issues which gained recognition in the global platform. In the past five years, there were more than 30 screenings of our movies in international film festivals.

MSN also works in audio production. Audio Campaigns are an excellent platform to disseminate information. MSN has produced Audio programmes and public service announcements for different organizations and broadcasted from different radio stations across the country.

Media campaign on social issues

MSN has worked both as a media partner and independently in various projects that highlighted social issues. We have worked on various issues such as women's and minorities rights, education and poverty along with health and sanitation, disaster risk reduction and other issues in Nepal . In the past few years we have worked on several campaigns such as:

Pre-press and Printing Work

MSN in the print sector focuses on the development of IEC materials. We provide different work services like poster and leaflet preparation, hoarding boards, service on report writing, event study writing and making brochures. MSN provides service for layout designing, high quality printing, and editing of books and reports, survey and coordination of office publications.

Write-shop training

Write-shop is a writing workshop package which enables people to write systematically and effectively. It provides guidelines and effective techniques and trains participants to write in an organized manner. The training focuses on various aspects of development writing such as case study preparation and best practice documentation.

The write-shop provides trainings to development practitioners, social immobilizers, development activists. Through ample practice sessions, they become accustomed to expressing their ideas and documenting realities. The principal objective of Writeshop is to enhance writing skills of people associated with development in their respective organizations. Their increased efficiency will allow them to make a greater difference.

Digital Media Training

Media Services Nepal offers Digital Media Training for development activists and practitioners, to enhance their capacity and acquaint them with different communication tools in the digital world. Adept usage of Digital Media leads to more creative and reflective documentation. This package training will introduce participants to audio/visual presentations, photography, moviemaking techniques and empower them to improvise their communication expertise in the development sector.

Case Study Development

Case Study is an effective tool which can be used to measure the impact of a project. It also serves as an excellent resource for research. At MSN we develop written case studies that have proven helpful for various development projects. Our expertise is skilled in writing such documents which can be used for various organizational purposes. MSN also provides training on case study preparation.

Best practice Documentation

While case studies outline both the failure and success of particular methods, best practice documentation involves collecting the most effective practices. At MSN we document best practices which organizations and projects can use to develop strategies and sketch out methods.

Photographic Documentation

Pictorial records are valuable resources and tools which serve various purposes. MSN provides comprehensive photographic documentation for organizations involved with various projects in the development sector.

PR and Advertising

MSN is also a Broadcasting service provider. Our network includes a number of reputed broadcasting agencies. We have worked with TV channels, radios and print media networks for an array of public service projects. MSN works with organizations on developing various materials and then collaborates with appropriate agencies for those particular products to be disseminated. We also conduct PR skill trainings for project staffs, upon an organization's demand.

Communication strategy development

MSN also builds communication strategies for development organizations. Our team is well oriented in the field of communication and we have used our expertise to chalk out effective strategies to enhance both the process and outcome of projects.

Media campaign on social issues

Education campaign

MSN was Global Education Campaign's media partner as it advocated the importance of basic and primary education. We worked on a national level to raise the issues of poor and marginalized groups. ActionAid Nepal also supported this media campaign in the year 2000. We continue to work with stake holders to advocate different issues in the education sector such as parents concern in education, the role of teachers, and the upliftment of public education system.

Health Communication

MSN has worked on various health-related issues with stake holders such as the Rural Health Development Project's (RHDP) Swiss agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Project, CARE Nepal, PLAN, Family Health International (FHI) ADRA Nepal and AMDA Nepal. It has produced different audio-visual, news bulletins, manuals, brochures pertaining to health communication and empowerment of rural Nepal. MSN worked with AMDA Nepal on a media campaign that focused on the preventive aspects of HIV/AIDS. It also worked for behavioral change communication in partnership with AMDA Nepal - STI project.

Agricultural promotion

We have worked on topics pertaining to food security, farming technology, use of pesticides, agricultural market, documentation of indigenous knowledge of farming, the impact of climate change on agriculture. MSN has collaborated with different stakeholders. We partnered with Sustainable Soil Management Programme (a project of Helvetas Nepal and SDC) for four years (2003-2007) to produce a media campaign focusing on sustainable soil management aspects. Likewise, we partnered with ActionAid, Oxfam GB Nepal, Rural Development Tuki Association (RDTA), Tuki Association SunKoshi (TASK) for different projects.

Disaster Risk Reduction

MSN has been involved with Disaster Ris Reduction media campaign in collaboration with Oxfam GB Nepal. MSN developed seven audio-visual materials for television and advocacy purposes for a DipECHO project in 2007. In the subsequent years 2009 and 2010, MSN prepared video documentaries for DipECHO partners- ActionAid, CARENepal, Danish Red Cross, Handicap International, Practical Action, UNDP Nepal, MercyCorps and Oxfam. We've also produced a documentary based on natural disasters with Action Aid Nepal. MSN has been working continue in disaster risk reduction theme.

Water and Sanitation

In 2004 MSN collaborated with Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project (RWSSSP), a FINNIDA project. We produced some audio-visual material about arsenic mitigation, gender programme, a process film on rain water harvesting and lime control in water system. MSN also developed some audio-visual materials about water and sanitation for a CARE-ECHO project based on field practices in far western districts of Baitadi and Darchula. We have also worked on the theme- water and sanitation with CARE Nepal, Sewak Nepal, ADRA Nepal, Water Aid Nepal, Rural Village Water Resources Management Project (RVWRMP), Oxfam, and UNICEF and produced more than a dozen video documentaries.

Conflict and Peace

During the crucial hour of Nepal's conflict and civil war, we covered many aspects of the insurgency. We developed several documentaries during the conflict and after the peace process. We have also followed-up on cases during the post conflict situation. MSN has been working with different organizations such as ActionAid Nepal, National Dalit Commission, Enabling State Programme (ESP)-DFID, UNMIN and UN Women on the issue. We also worked closely with Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation in this process.

Technical capacity:

Media Service Nepal (MSN) has its own digitally equipped audio-visual studio, and audio and graphics office for print medium. We have more than 5 sophisticated HDV/ DVcam and DV cameras for professional visual work. State of the art editing and other facilities are also available in our media house. We can work simultaneously on different projects and are always ready to work on project planning together. In our audio-visual studio, we have been demonstrating expertise in Non-linear editing system. This is most efficient for effective production and graphics works.
